A Scoring Race for the Ages: Greenway Passes Oehrlein to Claim All-Time Scoring Crown

By Roger Johnson

Maddyn Greenway of Providence Academy scored 43 points ln the section finals against Maranatha Christian Academy that not only helped propel the Lions into the state tournament but also allowed her to pass Crosby-Ironton star Tori Oehrlein to become the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota girls’ basketball history with 5,505 points…and counting. Oehrlein’s season came to an end when her Rangers were upset by Pequot Lakes in the section semi-finals, finishing her career with 5,485 points.

This was an epic battle that saw both scoring sensations shatter the previous girls’ record of 5,060 points set by Braham’s Rebekah Dahlman in 2013. (They also surpassed the boys’ recordholder Anders Broman of Lakeview Christian Academy who scored 5,119 points in his career.) Greenway and Oehrlein are now in elite company becoming just the 10th and 11th girls in the nation to surpass the 5,000-career point milestone.

While this scoring race technically began 6 years ago when Greenway and Oehrlein made their varsity debuts as 7th graders, it really came into focus last year when both players surpassed the 4,000-point mark and Dahlman’s record was within reach. It certainly became the preeminent story line in girls’ basketball heading into the 2025-26 season. Greenway entered the year with a 27-point advantage and the two traded the top spot several times throughout the season, highlighted by sensational scoring outbursts that captured the attention of the media and Minnesota basketball fans alike. Greenway has had seven 40 plus point games this season (with a high of 57 vs. Hill-Murray) and Oehrlein countered with ten games of 40 or more points (with a high of 57 vs. Mille Lacs).  Oehrlein actually has a slightly higher career scoring average than Greenway (31.3 vs. 30.2). Okay, let’s be real here – these numbers are absolutely insane. They averaged more than 30 ppg for a 6-year career. Most high school players would be thrilled to score 30 points once in their lifetime.

Record-Setting Careers

Greenway and Oehrlein are living proof that records are made to be broken.

  • In addition to breaking Dahlman’s scoring record, they are the only two players in state history to surpass 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists in their careers. What is that even called, a triple quadruple, maybe? Greenway’s career high of 60 points vs. Minnehaha Academy as a freshman ranks 2nd on the all-time list, just 3 points shy of the top spot held by McKenna Hofschild of Prior Lake. Oehrlein’s single game high of 57 points ranks 4th all-time.
  • With 2,200 plus rebounds, Oehrlein broke the state’s career rebounding record held by Tresa Baumgard of Chisholm and now ranks in the top 10 nationally. Oehrlein also holds Minnesota’s single game assist record with 21.
  • Greenway has surpassed 1,200 career assists, breaking the record set by Alaina Jarnot of Maranatha Christian Academy and ranking in the top 10 nationally.  She has also won 4 state 2A championships and holds the career record for points scored in the state tournament with 439…and counting.

Video Game Numbers

While Greenway and Oehrlein have had legendary careers, their senior year stat lines are eye-popping and simply video game like numbers.

Oehrlein Greenway
Points 37.8 36.4
Rebounds 15.0 6.9
Assists 7.5 9.2
Steals 6.7 6.3

Ms. Basketball Award

In almost any other year, Oehrlein would be a virtual lock for the Minnesota Ms. Basketball award. She committed to play D1 basketball with the home state Gophers, has one of the greatest statistical resumes ever, and helped lead the Rangers to their first 2A state championship game appearance last season. Unfortunately, as part of the Class of 2026, she is up against Greenway, perhaps the most decorated player in Minnesota girls’ basketball history. The Kentucky commit was recently named to the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game and, in addition to her amazing stats, she is the greatest winner in state history, leading her team to 4 consecutive championships with the opportunity to become the only player to ever win 5 titles, if Providence Academy can 5-peat this week. And for good measure, she won a Gold Medal this past summer as part of USA Basketball’s U19 team at the World Cup.

From everyone at Hoop Habits we would like to thank Maddyn and Tori for taking us on a magical ride as we watched two of the nation’s best battle for Minnesota’s all-time scoring record.
